Bedford is almost the opposite.
You can drive past centuries-old stone walls, horse farms and winding country roads without realizing that some of the people living behind those gates are among the most recognizable names in entertainment, fashion and business.
Martha Stewart, Ralph Lauren, Glenn Close, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are among the famous names associated with the Bedford area over the years. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds began their Westchester chapter with a home in Bedford before moving a few miles away to neighboring Pound Ridge.
And that raises an interesting question:
Why Bedford?
Why would people who can afford to live virtually anywhere choose this quiet corner of Westchester County?

Bedford feels remarkably removed from New York City.

In 2000, Stewart purchased the property she calls Cantitoe Corners, or Bedford Farm, in Katonah, part of the Town of Bedford.

If Martha Stewart embodies Bedford’s country lifestyle, Ralph Lauren represents another side of its personality.
Lauren has been associated with Bedford for decades, with his property reflecting the area’s long equestrian tradition. The Bedford Citizen includes him among the many prominent people who have called the area home.
It’s difficult to imagine a setting better suited to the Ralph Lauren image.
Horse country.
Fieldstone.
Weathered wood.
Historic houses.
Rolling lawns.
Old-fashioned American elegance.
Much of what people around the world recognize as the Ralph Lauren lifestyle already exists naturally in Bedford.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Chose Westchester Country Life
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds provide a more contemporary example.
In 2012, shortly before marrying, the couple reportedly purchased a country home in Bedford. CBS New York reported at the time that they had already been spotted horseback riding and dining locally.
They eventually sold that property and moved just a few miles away to Pound Ridge, where their primary country residence has been widely reported to sit on more than 11 acres.
So while you’ll frequently see their home described loosely as “Bedford,” Pound Ridge is the more accurate location for their current Westchester residence.
But their lifestyle illustrates exactly what draws celebrities to the Bedford-Pound Ridge area.
They can have acreage, woods and privacy while remaining connected to New York City.
And perhaps most importantly, they can have something resembling a normal neighborhood life.
In Bedford, Seeing Someone Famous Isn’t Necessarily an Event
This may be Bedford’s real secret.
A celebrity can actually live here.
Not simply own an estate here.
A 2026 Avenue feature on Bedford captured the culture particularly well, describing a place where seeing Blake Lively at the post office doesn’t necessarily cause everyone around her to stop what they’re doing.
That kind of environment is extraordinarily valuable if you’re famous.
The local coffee shop doesn’t need to become a photo opportunity.
Going out to dinner doesn’t necessarily mean entering through a private door.
Children can participate in community life without every outing feeling like a public appearance.
The luxury isn’t being noticed.
The luxury is being left alone.
The Celebrity List Is Remarkable
Bedford’s famous-resident history is surprisingly extensive.
Over the years, published accounts have connected the area with names including Glenn Close, Richard Gere, Chevy Chase, Mariah Carey, Bruce Willis, Felicity Huffman, Paul Shaffer and Rooney Mara, along with Stewart, Lauren, Douglas and Zeta-Jones.
Not every celebrity on historical lists necessarily lives there today, of course. Homes are sold, families move and some “Bedford” celebrity stories actually refer to neighboring communities.

This isn’t simply a suburb where developers added a few bridle paths to make a neighborhood sound upscale.

The Bedford Riding Lanes Association maintains a network of riding trails through private and public land, preserving a tradition that has existed for generations.
That gives parts of Bedford the feeling of Connecticut horse country or the English countryside despite being roughly an hour from Manhattan.
For someone looking for acreage and privacy without moving several hours from New York, that’s a difficult combination to duplicate.
Then There Is Bedford Village
The center of Bedford Village is another reason the community feels different.
Rather than a conventional suburban commercial strip, there’s the historic Village Green surrounded by architecture that reinforces Bedford’s colonial history.
The town itself dates to the 17th century.
Nearby, the John Jay Homestead in Katonah preserves the home and farm of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States.
That history matters because it gives Bedford something that can’t simply be created by building expensive houses.
It has a sense of place.
Privacy May Be Bedford’s Greatest Luxury
There will always be flashier places to live.
Manhattan has penthouses.
The Hamptons have oceanfront estates.
Los Angeles has enormous gated compounds overlooking the city.
But Bedford offers a different definition of luxury.
