Luxury Spas and Wellness Escapes Without Leaving Westchester

  • by

Sometimes you need a vacation. Other times, you just need a really good massage, a plush robe and a few uninterrupted hours where nobody needs anything from you.

Fortunately, Westchester has some surprisingly luxurious places to make that happen.

From a historic former convent perched above the Hudson River to a sophisticated hotel spa in the heart of White Plains and a secluded Bedford inn surrounded by 20 acres of woodland, you don’t necessarily need to leave the county to feel as though you’ve escaped somewhere else entirely.

Whether you’re planning a romantic overnight stay, a girls’ spa day or simply an afternoon devoted to yourself, these are some of the most indulgent spa and wellness experiences to discover in Westchester.

The Abbey Inn & Spa – Peekskill

If the goal is to truly feel as though you’ve gone away, The Abbey Inn & Spa may be Westchester’s ultimate staycation.

Perched high on Fort Hill overlooking the Hudson River, the property began as a convent and chapel established by the Episcopal Sisters of Saint Mary in 1902.

Today, the beautifully restored historic property has been transformed into a 42-room luxury hotel surrounded by more than 65 acres.

The setting alone is worth the trip.

Guests can take in views of the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands, wander the grounds or settle into an Adirondack chair overlooking the landscape before heading to the spa.

The on-site Zentori Spa offers massages, facials and more specialized treatments, combining traditional relaxation with modern skincare.

Current treatments include Hydrafacials, Geneo facials and scalp treatments in addition to massage and facial packages.

For an overnight escape, The Abbey currently offers a Stay, Sip and Spa package that includes accommodations, two welcome mimosas and a $200 spa credit.

And when the spa day is finished, there’s no need to drive home. Stay the night and have dinner at the property’s farm-to-table restaurant, Apropos.

It’s difficult to believe you’re still in Peekskill.

Best for: A romantic overnight escape or girls’ getaway with a true destination-spa atmosphere.

Location: 900 Fort Hill Road, Peekskill

The Opus Spa – White Plains

For a more cosmopolitan version of the spa getaway, head to downtown White Plains.

Located inside The Opus Westchester, the Opus Spa creates a luxury retreat high above the city.

This is a particularly good choice for someone who wants more than a massage appointment.

The spa offers signature massages, facials and restorative body treatments, but guests can also enjoy amenities designed to extend the experience beyond the treatment room.

There is a eucalyptus steam room, sauna, relaxation lounge and indoor rooftop pool.

That means you can turn a 50- or 80-minute treatment into something that feels much closer to a proper spa day.

Spa memberships are also available for locals who want regular access to the wellness facilities rather than treating the experience as an occasional indulgence.

And because you’re inside a luxury hotel, an afternoon spa appointment can easily become dinner, drinks or an overnight stay.

Best for: A polished, city-style spa day without going into Manhattan.

Location: 3 Renaissance Square, White Plains

Bedford Post Inn – Bedford

If your idea of wellness involves trees, quiet and getting away from everything, Bedford Post Inn offers something quite different.

The intimate eight-room inn sits on approximately 20 acres of woodland in Bedford and combines historic country charm with a decidedly upscale approach to wellness.

This isn’t simply about booking a massage.

Guests can arrange forest bathing, following a suggested path through the property’s trails while intentionally slowing down and connecting with the surrounding landscape.

There are also private sound baths featuring crystal bowls, gongs and Tibetan and Himalayan bells.

Other wellness experiences include Reiki, acupuncture and customized massage treatments performed in the privacy of your room.

The property’s Yoga Loft offers daily yoga classes, workshops and private sessions, with unlimited complimentary yoga classes included for overnight guests.

And the accommodations are very much part of the wellness experience.

Depending on the room, you might find exposed beams dating to the 18th century, a fireplace, private terrace, freestanding soaking tub and heated marble bathroom floors. Guests are provided Frette robes and slippers, and even the bath and skincare products have been thoughtfully selected.

It’s less of a traditional “spa hotel” and more of a secluded luxury wellness retreat.

Best for: Couples, solo escapes and anyone who prefers holistic wellness and nature to a conventional spa day.

Location: 954 Old Post Road, Bedford

Oasis Day Spa – Dobbs Ferry

If you want the spa experience without booking a hotel, Oasis Day Spa in Dobbs Ferry offers one of Westchester’s more extensive day-spa menus.

Located in Rivertowns Square, Oasis was designed to bring a Manhattan-style spa experience to Westchester.

Treatments include a wide selection of massages and facials along with body treatments, scrubs and wraps.

One particularly interesting feature is the European Vichy shower used for certain body treatments, where multiple streams of warm water are incorporated into the experience.

Oasis also offers Reiki and advanced skincare options.

This is the kind of place where you can book several treatments and create your own half-day escape without the expense of an overnight hotel stay.

Best for: A traditional full-service spa day with lots of treatment choices.

Location: 50 Hamilton Street, Dobbs Ferry

Spavia Day Spa – Thornwood

For a resort-inspired spa experience that’s easy to turn into a regular indulgence, Spavia Day Spa in Thornwood is another option.

The spa specializes in massage, skincare and body treatments in an environment designed around relaxation rather than the feel of a typical salon.

Massage choices range from relaxation-focused experiences to treatments targeting specific areas of tension, while facial and skincare services provide another option for creating a multi-treatment spa day.

One of Spavia’s advantages is accessibility: you don’t need to reserve a hotel room or make an entire weekend of it.

You can disappear for a few hours and still be home by dinner.

Best for: A relaxing spa afternoon, birthday treat or recurring self-care day.

Location: 988 Broadway, Thornwood

Tranquility Spa – Scarsdale

The name pretty much explains the goal.

Tranquility Spa in Scarsdale is designed for guests who want the experience to extend beyond simply walking into a treatment room, getting a massage and leaving.

In addition to massages, facials and body treatments, the spa includes locker and relaxation areas and a steam room, allowing guests to slow the experience down.

That distinction matters.

Sometimes the luxury of a spa day isn’t necessarily a more elaborate treatment—it’s having somewhere comfortable to sit in a robe afterward without immediately returning to emails, errands and real life.

Best for: A traditional spa-day experience close to central and southern Westchester.

Location: 917 Central Park Avenue, Scarsdale

Botanic Face & Body Spa – Tarrytown

For something smaller and more intimate, Botanic Face & Body Spa offers a boutique wellness experience in Tarrytown.

The focus here leans toward holistic treatments and personalized care rather than the sprawling amenities of a resort spa.

Offerings include plant-based skincare and facial rituals, therapeutic massage, lymphatic treatments and Reiki.

Its Tarrytown location also makes this one particularly easy to turn into a leisurely day out.

Book a treatment, walk through the village, have lunch or dinner and spend some time along the Hudson.

Sometimes the best Westchester escape doesn’t require an overnight bag.

Best for: Holistic treatments and a quieter boutique spa experience.

Location: 54 North Broadway, Tarrytown

European Luxury Day Spa – White Plains

For those whose definition of wellness includes serious skincare, European Luxury Day Spa offers another White Plains option.

Treatments range from Swedish, deep-tissue and hot-stone massage to an extensive selection of facials and skin treatments.

Services include deep-cleansing and brightening facials as well as more advanced options such as microdermabrasion and microneedling.

Compared with the large hotel spas, this is more treatment-focused, making it a good choice when the primary objective is a facial or massage rather than spending the entire day using resort amenities.

Best for: Skincare-focused spa visits and massage.

Location: 508 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains

Turn a Spa Appointment Into a Westchester Escape

One of the best things about Westchester’s wellness scene is how different these experiences can be.

You can wake up overlooking the Hudson at The Abbey Inn, spend a quiet morning forest bathing in Bedford or slip into a robe above downtown White Plains without ever leaving the county.

And you don’t necessarily need an entire weekend.

A massage followed by lunch in Tarrytown can become a mini getaway. A facial and rooftop pool afternoon in White Plains can replace a trip into Manhattan. An overnight stay in Peekskill or Bedford can feel surprisingly far removed from everyday life.

Perhaps that’s the real luxury.

You don’t always need to go very far to get away.
